Reflection: Intervention and Extension Observing Stars, A Fiction Connection - Section 5: Closing (Prepare for Landing)


To support beginning writers in this task, I provide a sentence starter for them to copy.  I also provide a box with picture clues to give them a resource for spelling the setting names.  

To support more advanced writers, I tell them how to extend the sentence by using the word "because" and telling more.  I also have provided a higher level vocabulary word-- innumerable-- on our graphic organizer.  When introducing higher level vocabulary, I introduce the word and use it in multiple ways.  Then, students have a chance to use it.  I write the word on our WOW (Wonderful Outstanding Words) section of the blackboard, and children glue the list of WOW words into their homework book each week.  This way, parents are encouraged to have their students use the words in discussion and writing at home as well!

The introduction of the new word went something like this:

There is a word we can use when there are too many of something to count.  The word is innumerable.  You can even hear the word "number" in the word "innumerable."  For example, there are too many leaves on a large tree to count; the leaves are innumerable!  It is impossible to count all of the grains of sand on the beach; the sand is innumerable!  What else can you think of that is innumerable?

Objective: SWBAT describe the setting using key details and illustrations.

Big Idea: How many stars are in the sky? Today we read a lovely book where a boy and his father try to count the stars. Take a journey with them through the city and country as more and more stars appear!
