Reflection: Diverse Entry Points Tour the Basics - Section 4: Tour the Basics Quest

Because of the ubiquitous nature of genetics topics in the news and popular TV shows, students come with a multitude of ideas about what this is all about. The purpose of presenting the Tour the Basics interactive is to begin to develop a common language and understanding.

I chose to use this interactive in order to provide the concept definitions and have students relate to them in the multi-media format they prefer. No student wants to receive a vocabulary list and be asked to write down definitions. What they do not actually realize is that I am asking them to do just that.

Now, this is not to say that this is the only time the vocabulary will be discussed. Each of the ideas will be gone over in detail as we proceed through the unit, and the Tour the Basics sheet ends up becoming a tool for students go back to as needed to clarify concepts and ideas.
