Reflection: Student Communication What's With That Crazy Nye Guy? Weathering One More Time! Day 1 - Section 2: Appreciating Our Teamwork Skills


In this lesson, I wanted them to gather more information about weathering, but I also wanted to take the opportunity to build collaborative skills. This is often a teaching challenge with fourth graders, especially in science. And while it is January and mid year, this process is still developing. The Presentation Guide is designed so that they first share their individual ideas, then they search for their common ideas. This helps them see how their individual perspectives are important in the group as they personally write their idea on the blank. Then, they collaborate to find the common ideas. What I saw was a group of students who were engaged in conversation with a level of joy. The videos I shared are good samples for you to see the atmosphere that this created. I was pleasantly surprised by this. I didn't expect the level of excitement and engagement that I got from them, but I am thinking it has to do with their opportunities to be heard as individuals and then their experience of realizing that they have common ideas and notice the same important things. I am anxious to see what they dream up for their presentation of these ideas. These last clips,  "Everyday a rock would change!" and "Student is explaining the team process", shows how they support one another in gathering the information and the level of trust and respect that they have established in their groups. I just loved witnessing it!

Big Idea: Students grappling with understanding effects of weathering on the Earth's surface benefit from this video as they jigsaw their new information to prepare for a group presentation.
