Reflection: Routines and Procedures Balloon Stoichiometry - Section 2: Engage


Over the years I have the best way of treating homework is to stamp it for completion.  This works for several reasons:

  1. I am able to quickly give credit to students who have done the homework
  2. I can directly go over the answers to the homework so students have feedback on how they performed.
  3. If students did not complete the homework, they can still finish as we review the answers/on their own and get half credit when I check their binders at the end of the unit.  (For more information on how I perform binder checks see my reflection in the evaluate section of my density part II lesson from unit 1.

There are some cons to checking for completion including:

  1. Students can easily copy from other students and I will not know because I am only quickly looking at their papers.
  2. Students may not actually spend a lot of time on the problems because they know that I am not checking for correct answers, but rather that they simply attempted the work.

Despite the cons I still feel that in general using stamps is the most effective way for me to treat homework in my classroom.

Balloon Stoichiometry

Unit 4: Unit 5: Stoichiometry, Chemical Reactions, and First Semester Review
Lesson 3 of 7

Objective: Students will be able to calculate the percent yield of carbon dioxide in the chemical reaction between sodium bicarbonate and acetic acid using a calculated theoretical yield and actual yield from performing an experiment.

Big Idea: Stoichiometry allows chemists to determine the theoretical yield of a product. additionally after performing an experiment chemists can then calculate percent yield using the experimental value from the lab and the theoretical value from calculations.
