Reflection: Rigor Biosphere: The Earth's Biomes Day 2 - Section 3: Explore

During many conferences today, I asked students to use their scientific research to make evidence-based inferences (arguments) based on the facts in the text. I found that this strategy encouraged students to think even deeper about the text than simply asking students to explain what they have learned. This ultimately increased the rigor of the research process.

For example, during this conference, Making Inferences about Savannas, the students read that the savanna is dotted with trees. Thereafter, I ask the students to make an inference using this evidence from the text. The students then infer that "lots of animals must try to get under the trees" and "they might fight to get under the trees" at times.

By encouraging students to make inferences, the students naturally apply their own experiences and thoughts to scientific content that is otherwise difficult to connect with.
