## Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Desert Gems of Biodiversity - Section 3: Explore!

Since we have done this same counting activity with different habitats, I have already noticed how much better they have become with counting by 100's.  At the beginning of this unit, I had to help them count once we got past 500, and they had a tremendous amount of difficulty counting after the benchmark number of 900.  They also had trouble knowing that 1,100 comes after 1,000.  Now most are able to do this with ease.  This time, the only time I had to chime in was when they were not isync with their counting because some were counting too fast.  It is so exciting when something works well!

## Big Idea: "Gems of Biodiversity" is a great visual tool to help children grasp the idea of biodiversity of the desert. It can also be used to help the children understand relationships and as a springboard for an exercise in reasoning.
