Reflection: ELL Students Earthworm Structure- Inside Out! - Section 3: Small Group Instruction


For this age, delivery is key.  In my experience, I’ve found an engaging lesson implementation (the way students practice what they just learned) for English Learners can make the difference between a lesson that provides lasting information and a piece of paper that ends up crushed in the bottom of the backpack.   

For this lesson, I considered using a simple “fill in the blank picture and complete the picture” worksheet to illustrate the body structure.  Sometimes, though, text on paper can be quite a roadblock when English is not your first language.  They have nothing to help them understand the material if the practice activity is built around words they can't yet understand.  I wondered how to better provide opportunities for all students to really connect- both with the learning activity and the essential communication exposure they get when they share their thinking with others.  This playdough model provided the English Learners both- a concrete opportunity to actively interact with the material and each other.  Since playdough is incredibly engaging to this age, I thought “Why not use it to get them excited about earthworms?”.  And so we did.
