Reflection: Real World Applications It's Apple Season!! - Section 3: Explore

I explain to the children that not only do scientists need to know how to read critically, they also need to know how to organize the thoughts and details that they read.  Reminding them that their brain really likes to have things organized.  So it only makes sense that we learn how to organize the details we are going to read in this passage. It is necessary for students to practice this skill because it will be a big part of their coming years in school.

Explaining to the children that we have to have a way to document the ideas and organize the thoughts means we will need to have an organizer.  I show the children the paper that we will use and how to fold the page.  This will be the beginning of our organization.

According to Robert Marzano, teaching students to be effective note takers is one of the nine highly effective strategies teachers can employ to raise student achievement and retain learning.  I want my students to be able to retain the information I teach them for later science lessons, offering a strategy to do this, will build longevity into the my student's learning.
