Reflection: Safety Introducing Constructions: Copy a Segment and Angle - Section 1: Warm-Up: Write Your Name Using a Compass and Straightedge Only


Each year I wonder whether I should dedicate 5-10 minutes of class time to having students write their name using their compass and straightedge.  However, once students “play” with their constructions tools, I realize the value in giving them time to get comfortable using their compasses in a low-stakes way. 


By having students construct their names using uppercase and lowercase letters , they start to get a sense of how their compasses can help them to transfer lengths or create arcs and circles that are equidistant from a given point.  An idea I had this year was to have students sketch lines similar to the ones they used in their early elementary schooling—this seemed to help them think about size and guided them in their constructions.
