Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Journey to the Ocean - Section 2: Guided Practice


My students are familiar with the close read annotation symbols used in this lesson and the previous lesson to mark the non-fiction text because we use these in our daily reading. These text marks are valuable as they encourage students to focus on their reading, to ask for clarification on unknown words or phrases, and to highlight important parts of the text. Since students traditionally struggle more with reading non-fiction texts, the use of this strategy is very important to help students understand this dense text. Using the same strategy in both science and reading also helps students because they make cross-curricular connections.

Big Idea: Salmon fry change into smolts when they migrate to an estuary and prepare to enter the sea. Adult salmon are part of the ocean ecosystem.
