Reflection: Student Ownership Identifying A Real Problem - Section 3: Sharing Our Findings


The goal in this lesson was to keep students engaged in the process of identifying a real world problem in their own town and then trying to do something about that problem. 

There is always a problem when a homework assignment is given and several students do not complete the work. In the case of surveying parents, several students did not hand in their homework on time so they did not have a paper to cut. To keep them engaged while others were cutting I asked them to help their neighbors sort the papers. As one student cut, a child without the homework put the question on the right paper. This helped to keep students engaged.

Also, in the next part of the lesson, the students no longer had just their own papers, but instead they were part of a group responding to just one question. This format allowed all students to get involved without feeling that they didn't have their own questions to work with. I had each student take one of the responses and read it to the group and then glue it down. This way everyone stayed engaged in the lesson and was active in defining the problem.
