Reflection: Intrinsic Motivation Changing Matter: Day One of Nahari Has The Solution! - Section 2: Focus & Motivation

Why build student engagement?  Research shows that there is a strong link between student engagement and student achievement.  In fact, engaged students show an average increase in achievement of 27 to 31 percent.

In,The Art and Science of Teaching Marzano identifies 5 ways to engage students, and to keep their attention:

1.  High Energy - Add movement to lessons.

2.  Missing Information - Use academic focused puzzles and games.

3.  Mild Controversy and Competition - Include structured debates and competitions.

4.  The Self- System - Things students find personally interesting and valuable

5.  Mild Pressure - Generate some mild pressure during questioning - stretch students' thinking by not settling for easy answers.

Although I can't incorporate them into every single lesson, I do my best to build these components into every unit I teach.  I know that learning in my classroom begins with engagement.
