Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Two Methods of Metric Conversions - Section 2: Video Notes with Pause Points


Within this lesson, I had to take a detour from my plan to revisit the historical significance of basic physical units because students held on to a phrase I said, "pay special attention to the prefixes because they really matter." I had to make a real-time change and revisit these models because students had somehow taken my emphasis on prefixes to mean that the units themselves were irrelevant.  

I had to emphasize the importance of units within this lesson, because I saw many students with precise, but inaccurate technique using the ladder method of conversions, but with incorrect unit types. For example several students had a conversion from 1kg to 10000 cm. I introduced the video notes to the whole class, but distributed them via email so that students could interact with the notes on their own and use them to learn how to implement both techniques for metric conversions in a way that made sense to them.
