Reflection: Safety Unit Synthesis: empathy + define the problem + ideate (1 of 4) - Section 5: Empathy popcorn + we all have problems


This is one of the scariest and most successful learning experiences I have ever had in my classroom.  Students get into an almost trance state during the popcorn reading of tragedies and triumphs.  There were tears and lingering students by the end of the lesson.  Students did not want to leave and did not quite know what to say or process this experience.

Unit 1: "Unit 0": Engineering design thinking

Objective: Students will be able to: 1) create examples of the core competencies of social- emotional learning; 2) describe why human needs are the primary driver of effective design; and 3) assess common classroom needs in order to define a problem and ideate solution ideas

Big Idea: Reframing engineering design thinking as human centered design is an important reconceptualization. How might we surface the common, sometimes painful needs of students to design solutions that meet those needs?
