At the Middle School level, NGSS SP7 Engaging in Argument from Evidence states that, "The study of science and engineering should produce a sense of the process of argument necessary for advancing and defending a new idea or an explanation of a phenomenon and the norms for conducting such arguments. In that spirit, students should argue for the explanations they construct, defend their interpretations of the associated data, and advocate for the designs they propose." 

Supporting "argument" as a habit of mind requires that we teachers help our students to establish meaningful norms, offer them accessible, relevant and exciting (whenever possible) content to draw them in, and lots of practice and self reflection. 

Argumentation leads to understanding and understanding leads to explanations in science. Promoting argumentation in your science classes enables students to see how scientists use evidence and reasoning to defend their thoughts.  This helps reinforce the use of evidence in our classes.  If students can't defend their arguments with evidence then they must go back and keep searching.

Objective: SWBAT reconstruct the skeletal structure of a certain dinosaur, based on observations, prior knowledge and evidence-based reasoning.

Big Idea: Using observations and inferences doesn't have to be boring! You can implement this lesson to bring back excitement, while modeling good scientific practices, such as observing, inferring, argumentation and using evidence!
