Reflection: Intervention and Extension Mysteries of the Ocean, Part One - Section 2: Ocean Zones


I challenge the students when they finish to try to create a mnemonic to remember the zones. I go over what a mnemonic is and how we use them to remember things like the order of the planets or the directions on a compass. 

I have them do this on the back of their shaded zone notes. To start I explain that they need to write the first letter for each of the zones and then try to make a sentence or rhyme from there. Two heads are better than one, so I let the kids work in pairs.

Objective: SWBAT recognize and compare characteristics of marine life in the various zones that lie in the ocean.

Big Idea: Students will use ocean life to begin observe, and determine the characteristics that are need for survival in the various zones found in the ocean.
