Reflection: Gradual Release The ABC's of BAF (Brain Anatomy & Function)! - Section 3: Explore


        In this lesson, (this section in particular), I grant students an opportunity to become extensively familiar with the external anatomy of the brain prior to internal explorations to make the experience more progressive and richer in general. In most student guided dissections, students typically make very little connections between form and function and have little appreciation for why and how external anatomy relates to or influences the inner workings of the internal material. Similarly, with brain dissections, students are eager to see how the internal parts look but loose interest soon after this quest is conquered, leaving students no more enriched in the experience. If given the time to understand specific form and function of the brain's exterior, students are more likely to a) become equipped with a stronger intrinsic desire to continue explorations as opposed to losing their natural curiosity once they have already peered into the internal areas, and b) are more likely to navigate the brain's interior more purposefully and are then consequently, more prepared to draw meaningful comparisons and contrasts between areas of specific function as well as justifying their internal varied forms (eg. one area may have more white matter than gray, making connections in that region more efficient). Overall, this creates a more valuable experience for students because the overarching concept of form and function of an organ are quite comprehensible for the student.
