Reflection: Student Ownership Sound Waves - Part 1 Density - Section 2: Explore

This lesson was highly successful in engaging students.  The lesson's hands-on inquiry approach was fun and relevant.  If I had simply told students that the higher pitch sounds would be present in less dense liquids, a few students may remember the information.  When students are able to tap the liquids, listen, and discuss the results with peers, more students will remember the information.  Not only will students remember the information, many will go one step further and begin asking,  "Why is the pitch higher?"  They will begin thinking like a scientist and wonder what is going on with the sound waves to create a different pitch.

My students truly took ownership of their learning in this activity.  Through out the week, I had about 7 students repeat this lab at home with their families. The students used liquids they had at home; liquids like milk, orange juice, water, soda, and dish soap.  I consider this a huge success in students taking ownership of their learning.
