Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge Chocolate Changes State - Section 2: Warm Up


What I learned from the Review Activity: 

I began this lesson with a review over how the particles in matter are arranged and moving in each state.  The first lesson, modeling matter, was over how the particles are arranged and how they move in each state.  The second lesson, investigating changes of state, was describing how those particles speed up and spread apart as heat, or thermal energy, is added to them.  It is important to review key concepts often so that you know students understand those concepts, before going more in depth with the knowledge and understanding they have.

Because we had already discussed particle arrangement and movement in two other lessons, I expected students to demonstrate a good understanding of this.  When I began asking about the movement of the particles in a solid, I quickly learned they did not have a good understanding of this.  It is important for students to understand that all particles have energy and are in constant motion, in a solid they can only vibrate because of the strong bond holding them together.  In a liquid, that bond is weaker so they can move more freely, sliding past each other.  In a gas, the bond is very weak so the particles can move very quickly flying around everywhere.  In the video of review prior to lesson, you can see that it took several students, and me repeating the question numerous times, for someone to finally answer it correctly.  Students kept referring back to how the particles are arranged instead of telling me how they were moving.  

Importance of the Dry Ice Demonstration:

The dry ice demonstration was important to include in this lesson because it gave me the opportunity to check for understanding, which I learned was lacking.  It also gave me the opportunity to review all of these key concepts before going through the lesson for today.  Knowing how the particles are arranged and how heat changes their movement was crucial to completing their comic strips for today.  Because students are not able to see the particles or feel the particles vibrating in a solid, it is sometimes a difficult concept for them to understand.  By using the dry ice to allow them to hear the particles screech against the metal, the students have something to help them remember.  When they find something fun and exciting like they did this, it helps them retain the information better.

Big Idea: Students will be making their own yummy treats by melting chocolate, adding it to candy molds, and then freezing it back into a solid.
