Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Heat and Rate of Reaction: Conduction - Section 2: Elicit

Students may struggle with this model so give them time to think and grapple with the ideas.

You will probably have several students want to explain that energy is distributed across the metal bar from hot to cold with little to no loss of heat as most will probably not consider that the aluminum bar is making contact with the air where heat will be lost.

Push their thinking and guide towards sense of the laws of thermodynamics. These are tough concepts for middle schools students to wrap their head around.

I have included a couple student work samples (student reflection and student drawing) as models of what you might expect to see.

Heat and Rate of Reaction: Conduction

Unit 1: Heat Transfer and Interactions of Matter
Lesson 6 of 11

Objective: SWBAT will be able to describe how heat transfer by way of conduction effects the rate of a chemical reaction.

Big Idea: Help your students visualize how heat effects the rate of a chemical reaction using seltzer tablets and water.

Big Idea: Energy and matter are so closely related that we often have a difficulty distinguishing the two. This lesson helps students experience heat transfer so that they can explain how it affects matter and molecular motion.
