Reflection: Student Ownership Manufacturing a Board Game, Day 2 Assessment - Section 2: Mini Lesson


This lesson may seem "too cute" or "not content heavy enough" for some teachers.  I disagree, however, that it is not rigorous.  The students must compile all that they know and somehow create something that everyone can understand and use. (SP6, SP8) 

As the students are creating, they are highly engaged in making sense of information, not just doing science.  As you watch the videos, and see the products in the Day 3 lesson plan, realize that 8 year olds can create while thinking scientifically.  

Science does not, and I suggest, should not, be boring and only fact based.  It is exploration and creativity at the highest.  Let's let our children have fun while exploring and learning.

Objective: Students will be able to design a game board with features that review and teach their understanding of the life cycle of plants and their needs for survival.

Big Idea: Students need and deserve to create and have fun with the way they communicate knowledge. Tests don't always have to be on paper with one right answer, as this lesson will showcase.
