Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Persuasion vs. Argument: Analyzing to Formulate A Judgment - Section 3: Building Knowlege: Argument vs. Persuasion

Why are we spending time during this lesson looking at likes and differences between persuasion and argument? Prior to 8th grade students have been focusing on elaborating and developing ideas on persuasive topics. It isn't until now that CC standards are focusing more on argument and not ways we persuade readers in our writing.

This activity requires students to see through the Venn Diagram the distinct differences between persuasion and argument. While there may be some overlap of concepts, students at this age must rely on arguments to develop strong claims about topics. With the completion of this activity, students are able to understand how reasoning is developed with argument and claims. Additionally, teachers can see how multiple strands of writing are addressed within this one type of essay.
