Reflection: Homework The Recursive Process with Arithmetic Sequences - Section 3: Independent Practice


While observing my students working on the Independent Practice, I recognized that they were struggling with understanding the difference between the nth term (a subscript n) and n (the numerical position).  I decided to stop their work on the handout and clarify the difference between the two.  While I retaught this, I referred back to the Table Problem from the Warmup. 

In the table problem, the ninth table sat twenty people, so the 9th term is 20. The n is 9. Then, n-1 would be 8, but the previous term a subscript n-1 is 18.

Also, when there were 36 people, there were 17 tables, so the 17th term is 36, but n is 17 for this term. Then n-1 would be 16, but the previous term a subscript n-1 is 34.

I asked my students to complete the Independent Practice as homework, because many did not complete it in class.

Objective: SWBAT write a recursive formula from an arithmetic sequence, graph it, and describe the rate of change verbally and in writing.

Big Idea: This lesson takes students from the simple concrete problem of seating 4 people around a square table to the more abstract problem of finding the nth term.
