Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding What is heritage? - Section 3: Conclusion/Debriefing Heritage

My students benefit a lot by engaging in academic talk. Yet, in doing this lesson again, I would ask, how can I make this a more rigorous lesson for them> What would I do differently?

I would add a reading and writing task.

I would have them reread "Their Native Tongue" and the the small article, A Family that Digs Together and have them respond in thier journal:

•Why is the past important to the Chases in "A Family that Digs Together" and the Mohawk families in "Thier Native Tongue?"

This would challenge some of my students but, given the additions to the lessons, I would expect them to rise to the occasion. I would have to work with a group of 5 students who need extra guidance at this point of the year.

I feel this would give me a good indication of whether they understood point of the article, the concept of heritage, and why some people work very hard to preserve the past.

I would have them share their responses.

I could see some needing support with reading some of the words. I would ask them to help one another. But the writing would be an individual task.
