Reflection: Read Closely Now! - Comprehension Check - Section 4: Assessment

I have placed a great deal of emphasis on having students craft responses based on details in the text when discussing character traits, character feelings, answering and asking questions, etc. However, when students were asked to answer simple questions about the text, they did not rely on the text for answers. For example, one of the questions was, “What will Mulan do when she returns home?” One student wrote, "She will use the restroom and change clothes." While this may be what people do when they get home, the text says no such thing. Most students gave answers that were not derived from story details. In conclusion, I will need to reteach this skill in the context of answering questions and distinguishing their point of view from those of the characters in the text.
