Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Their Native Tongue Day 2 of 3 - Section 4: Debriefing


This is a lesson, I would do differently too.

I would keep the text dependent questions because my students benefit from the practice of going back into the text, noticing different aspects about informational text, and learning how text features add meaning to a text.

I would enhance the lesson showing by showing the second part of the video in the previous lesson. Here is the video link:

I would review the chart from yesterday and then have students watch the second part of it. Afterwards, I would ask them about the key details and chart them. Then, students would write about they learned about the Mohawks and the students at the Akwesasne School of Freedom.

Then, I would invite some of the students to share their entries. I feel this would make more a richer experience with the article and its content.

Big Idea: Besides learning Kanien'keha:ka, which is the language of the Mohawk Indians, students at the Akwesasne also learn to weave and get maple syrup from a tree. What else do they learn? Come find out.
