Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge Day 1 - "Ain't I a Woman?" by Sojourner Truth - Section 1: Anticipatory Set

I choose a circle map to begin this activity to help introduce my focal point and to get the students to begin making connections by activating their prior knowledge and experiences. I connect these two texts on the basis that each paints a picture of womanhood at its respective time, one that kids are highly unlikely to consider on their own. By starting this lesson and unit off with this activity, the students begin to develop their own goals relative to their own individual needs as we move forward. They do not realize it now, but they will.
