Reflection: Rigor Lewis Structures & Ions - Section 4: Explore


For this exploration activity I was trying to lead students into ion formation through working with charges.  I found that for the third part of the activity that students needed scaffolding to help with completion. 

To do this I did several things:

  • While teaching the first part of the lesson with valence electrons and dot structures I helped students to come to the idea that atoms with less than four valence electrons would lose them, and that those with more than four would gain as many as they needed to have 8.  While doing this I wrote it on the board to leave for the entire lesson (see attached picture).
  • After students did the first two parts of the activity I reviewed the ideas with them making sure to stress the Noble Gas that the element would become isoelectronic with, charge, etc.
  • I performed the first example for Part III with all students.  As I did this I made sure to point out how I determined valence electrons, how I was able to figure out which Noble Gas the atom would become isoelectronic with, whether the atom would gain or lose electrons (with why), how many electrons this would be, and whether the atom would become an anion or cation.
  • I led students through the next two examples of Part III giving them a few minutes to try on their own and then reviewed.
