Reflection: Standards Alignment Bioengineering: Microfluidics to the Rescue! (Day 2 of 3) - Section 3: The Classroom Flow: Making the Chips


One of the interesting things about microfluidic chips is that although they have many theoretical benefits in science in terms of downsizing materials needed and the time involved for completing medical tests and research experiments, their small size also comes with issues engineers need to manipulate.  For example, many intermolecular forces come into play in such tiny spaces in ways they don't when atoms and molecules are spread apart in larger containers.  Depending upon where you are in your curriculum, you could utilize these chips to highlight science phenomena related to diffusion, surface tension, polarity, and other intermolecular forces that impact flow rates that are necessary for chips to be successful. 

Because I use this unit early on in the school year before we have gotten to those deeper conceptual ideas, I focus on iterative processes of engineering as well as the connections between and practical applications of engineering and science.
