Reflection: Joy You're the author! (Author study; Day 5 of 5) - Section 1: Introduction

There are times when I wonder if the time spent on making the artifacts for publishing is worthwhile. I wonder if that time should not be spent in direct instruction. But then I see the joy they students derive from taking home an attractive book or project, and how they bring siblings and friends to see what I have posted on the window. They learn to persevere and they get a sense of ownership; it gives them a reason for writing and a reason for improving their writing. In addition. when the class is engaged in an independent activity to do with publishing, perhaps creating a book cover, or drawing and coloring borders as in this lesson, I call individuals for ongoing assessments or small groups for a quick mini lesson.
