Reflection: Checks for Understanding Tic Tac Toe: Student Constructed Review - Section 2: Tic Tac Toe: Set up the board

It was interesting to see what problems they picked. I noticed that many were avoiding the word problem. Word problems remain a difficult task for most of my students. My hope is that word problems become less scary to them as they develop solving strategies. As we progress through the operations in solving word problems as demanded by the standards, I would think that they would not avoid them like they are today. That is why I was sure to review the strategies prior to developing our board today.

I also saw indications that expanded form and rounding was still challenging.  I had to stop and remind most of my students where their notes were to refer to.  I needed to get the Slinky out to  help remind them of what a number should look like fully expanded! The slinky is still a great visual for expanded form as I expand it out in the chalk tray as one person holds one end just below the examples I have written  on the board.

Tic-tac-toe has allowed them to develop their work, discover their weaknesses and provide a study tool for tonight!
