Reflection: Real World Applications Reading a Technical Report - Section 4: Expand

The reading task is different with technical reports. The purpose of technical reporting is to gather information for later use, in a design presentation. In addition technical information is used to convince a client that a specific design is the best solution. I don't expect students to read all of the information, I expect them to be able to find useful information. I look at it like my car's highly technical warrantee. I don't read it all but I find the useful information, and use it when I need it.

Technical reports contain visual, statistical, and qualitative information based upon a variety of resources. The information should be conveyed fully and rapidly. Charts and graphs are read to easily digest information to be used on an as-needed basis.  Patterns, differences, similarities, and sometimes mind-blowing statistics are reported to the reader to influence the reader’s thinking and perhaps their decisions.
