Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding The Secret of the Summary: Chapter 2 - Section 2: Getting Down to Business

I think one of the reasons I enjoy middle school is so much is how we get to help kids not only learn content, but we get to help them learn how to be students.

I take this responsibility very seriously.

I love that I get emails from high-school students telling me how much value they've gotten from this strategy for summary writing.  Even if a student of mine remembers nothing about The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, a few emails extolling the virtues of a strategy I shared with them is so much more complimentary in my mind.

There are those of us who are really good at the game of school.  I learned it early and, though I had some stumbles along the way, I have always found great success in a school setting.  This is not so of everyone.  Study skills and new ways to comprehend material will help those kiddos who aren't natural-born students and, in the long run, help them in your class and classes in the future.
