Reflection: Performance Tasks Sorting Seeds - Section 2: Setting the Stage for the Seed Sort Lab


The Seed Lab is open ended in that I am not looking for students to group the seeds in any preordained sorts. This is an exploratory sort. The goal is that the students are looking at the form of the seeds critically and developing observation language. This activity will help build the schema that seeds come in all shapes and sizes and will have this experience to access as we learn about seed dispersal.

On the lab, I ask the teams to share one of their sorts with another team. I have this prompt on the lab because I want the students sharing their ideas, and it gives them a chance to move around the room in a purposeful way. The little ones need opportunities to get up and move around.

Objective: Through sorting seeds, SWBAT observe and describe how seeds are the same and different while developing their seed sorting criteria.

Big Idea: Students work with partners to explore the world of seeds, articulating similarities and differences.
