It's important to anticipate student misconceptions or points of confusion as you prepare lessons. Students often confuse the controls in an experiment with the control group. To lessen the confusion, I tell students to think of the control group as the “normal” group or the group that does not receive the variable that is being tested or measured.  I tell them to think of controls as those variables that are added to both the experimental and control (normal) group.  Expect some confusion but the independent practice that occurs later in the lesson will eliminate the confusion for most students.
