Looking at the list students created in the available space, which is meant to highlight the central points of Carhar’s argument, gives me a sense of what students are preparing to respond to. These three papers, for example indicate these students were able to understand the central points in the article, such as that Carhart has a problem with the color, the untraditional design, and the fact that it only includes the names of those who died. All three took notice of the line that this article and this controversy is most famous for, “…a black gash of shame and sorrow.” There is no sense of what position these students are going to take on this matter, but that is ok. They will have time to decide how they feel about Carhart’s argument and to develop a full written response.

Big Idea: I can't take student to go see the monument, but an LCD projector may bring part of it to us.
