Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Mutations: How Gene Changes Can Lead to Harmful, Beneficial, or Neutral Effects - Section 5: Evaluate

I believe the lesson was successful in students accomplishing the learning objective. Through writing and dialogue, students were able to support their claim that mutations can lead to changes in proteins. They did this by citing evidence from the lesson.

Most importantly students were able to answer our opening question, "Why is DNA the Molecule of Life?"  Students were able to effectively communicate the relationship between genes and proteins, through the genetic flow mechanism.  Students understood that small mutations in DNA can lead to changes to the protein structure that may be beneficial, deleterious, or neutral.  The idea of extreme change in protein structure gives us some of our modern day science fiction stories, such as Spiderman or X-men. More realistic changes can result in albinism or sickle cell anemia.
