Reflection: Checks for Understanding Pollution Sensitive Macroinvertebrates - Section 2: Guided Practice


I use the students' macroinvertebrate identification chart as a formative assessment. I am not concerned with the quality of the student's art work in their chart, rather I am looking at the quality of the description written in the right column. Since I model the creation of the chart in front of the class, I want to ensure that students have copied the material from the board correctly. It is also great to see where students have added their own observations onto the chart. This assessment is crucial to my instruction as I do not want to move on and introduce the second group of macroinvertebrates until I am sure that students understand the importance of bioindicator species in the ecosystem.

Objective: SWBAT identify and describe pollution sensitive macroinvertebrates.

Big Idea: Many macroinvertebrates can only live in cool, clean water. This makes them a bioindicator species that tell us important information on water quality.
