Reflection: Lesson Planning Poetry Performance - Section 3: Getting Down to Business

My pre-service curriculum classes, though interesting, were not much help to me as a middle school teacher.  The majority of my professors were preparing us for teaching high school, and the assumption was that one "did their time" in middle school before getting to move up to the big leagues - much like minor-league sports.

I have heard talk of a middle school teaching endorsement or focus, but nothing ever seems to come from it.  This is unfortunate because there are a lot of us who have found a home in middle school, and we want to get better at teaching that age group and using materials that are focused on preteens and younger teens.

So, what do we do?  Well, we modify materials that have been developed for high-school students.

That's exactly what I have done here with Moon's book.  Though the activity ideas are his, the questions and scaffolding are mine.  Middle school students cannot make big leaps on their own.  They need us to guide them more.

I'm glad I didn't chuck all of my high school materials when I was hired to teach middle school.  Though time-consuming, it is possible to make high school materials accessible for middle school students.
