Reflection: Adjustments to Practice Creating your own Systems of Equations - Section 2: Application


After students had finished the activity, I found when assessing student work that quite a few students did not interpret their solution with respect to the situation in the task. I had asked students to use blank paper to work on as they went around the different scenarios. With middle school students, structure and clear instructions cannot be overlooked. I"m completely sure that if I had made an organized worksheet with certain cues for them to work on, I would have gotten much more of what I wanted. I noticed that many actually knew what the solutions meant when I verbally asked. When assessing students, we must be careful and reflect on how we requested information from them. Was I clear enough? Could I have obtained learned information if I had used a different method of ?

A better strategy would have definitely been to give the students a pre-made worksheet with clear instructions for each task. Here is an example:
