Reflection: Routines and Procedures Lets Start Reading! - Section 5: Independent Reading with Conferring


I was impressed with how my students were able to go to the classroom library and pick their books fairly easily.  One student prompted me to give more guidance to the class when she raised her hand and asked me how many books should they pick.  I quickly made a chart and projected it.  It said if you are reading in the JKL range you should pick 4-6 books, MNOP- 3-4 books, and QRS-2-3 and T and above 1-2.

Another thing  I did not anticipated was how much determinig the setting was going to be difficult for them.  More on this in another lesson.  I realized that students need to connect the genre and setting.  The students who were grappling with setting were students reading in the MNO range and their books had ordinary settings "Anywhere, USA.  The confusion came up when the story would be at home and then in school, etc.  My thought when I asked them to be aware of the setting was more when setting is an important element to the plot.  So this will be a lesson I will come back to in the future.
