Reflection: Homework Monster Plants - Section 4: Homework: My monster plant


This lesson has been masterfully set up to satisfy the standard because it gets kids to observe,  model and construct an argument that proves they understand how the very specialized parts of a carnivorous plant function to help it survive. What better and more obvious plant to use than a Venus Fly Trap? How cool are those?  ( I remember feeding mine hamburger. You could get them at the local Woolworths for about 75 cents. They never lived very long but kept me occupied!) I was sure in my teaching to help them understand that plants are carnivorous because the bog soil does not provide all the nutrients that the plant needs. I think that they have the information they needed from their research, observations and videos to understand and prove they mastered this standard through this creative homework assignment.

Unit 6: Plants: Structures and Processes
Lesson 8 of 14

Objective: SWBAT construct an argument based upon a model that plants have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior and reproduction.

Big Idea: Given a set of criteria about climate and soil, students research carnivorous plants and create a model that will support their argument of how external parts help this plant survive in its environment.
