Students can get awfully carried away with their predictions and in years past I have always had that class clown that just predicts something ridiculous. This can really sabotage the other students train of thought and get your followers to stray off subject. Luckily, for me this year, I did not have this happen, YET.

My solution to this is to be ready with some precut strips of paper. I like to use scratch paper or recycled paper. I have them ready to hand to students for their predicting phases. What I would have them do instead of discuss their prediction, I would ask that they write it down. I then collect the strips and pull a few to share out loud. This way I can monitor better what is being said and it allows me to see everyones thinking later.

Unit 5: Spooky Fall Fiction: Graveyard Book

Objective: SWBAT use figurative language and inferencing to draw out the details of what the author is trying to tell us in the first few pages of the Graveyard Book.

Big Idea: To captivate your class and keep them on the edge of their seat, it is important to hook them from the start. This lesson uses the opening pages of the Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, to begin fine tuning their thinking and is perfect for inferencing.
