Reflection: Unit Planning Prewriting Argument Conferences Part 1 - Section 2: Conferences

When I plan a unit with a major writing task, like this one, I always plan for early conferences.  I realize this is something that to some seems like a waste of time to early on, but after years of speeding through the prewriting/planning phases of the process and spending tons of time on the other end, I learned that time spent on the planning aspects of the task actually save you time in the long run, and BONUS -when you invest time in individual conferences, it teaches your students that their growth as a writer is what is important instead of an end result to collect.

Spending this much time on planning isn't something I wanted to give in to.  I banged my head against the wall on this concept for years, but when I attended a month long (deep level PD) regional writing project in my state, I saw the light.

There are still days when I want to push and speed things up because we have so much to do! However, when we get to the end product I understand.  Now, I'm constantly reflecting to see if there are things I can do more of or differently early on in the writing process to help lessen and work on the end piece.
