Reflection: Intervention and Extension Awesome, Weird, Cool...Not! - Section 2: Word Wizard: A warm up to strengthen content vocabulary


I love the use of the Frayer Model! This allows students to understand vocabulary at individualized levels and appeals to the senses. Little pictures, matching sounds of other familiar words to the new word and encouragement to define the words with their own words makes this method of learning vocabulary very personal. For me, it serves as an assessment because I can see how students think about words, how well they can paraphrase and visualize as well as how they are hearing sounds as they learn their new vocabulary.

Objective: SWBAT use more precise and accurate scientific vocabulary to observe, describe and explain as they use their specialized senses to make sense of science.

Big Idea: From observing a cat to touching and describing mysterious things in brown paper bags, students learn to understand that specialized senses and precise words go hand in hand in developing good inquiry skills.
