Reflection: Performance Tasks Math Goodies: Developing Proficiency with Signed numbers - Section 1: Launch


A major issue when assessing student written work in math is evaluating what the student wrote in their response to the question, without guesswork. All good teachers want to give students all the "points" possible on a given task or question. But, we must be careful because the feedback that students receive is crucial to his/her realization of their level of mastery on the particular benchmark or standard.

In the formative assessment process, feedback needs to be accurate so that the student can use it to improve. Teachers must let students know, with strictness, where they are being ambiguous, and where their writing is requiring terminology that helps answer the question at hand.
