Reflection: Unit Exams Adding and Subtracting Fractions Assessment - Section 1: The Assessment


One of the main topics of this unit on fractions was creating and/or using models to demonstrate understanding.  It is vastly important that students are able to reason through what a fraction looks like in order to gain that flexible understanding that leads to analytical reasoning. 

For example, without a flexible understanding of fractions students will have a difficult time trying to manipulate or alter a fractional number.  So, I have built models into this unit and hence into the assessment.  However, I do feel it is important for students to begin putting equations with these models.  The models are only a means to fully understand the concept, which is represented mathematically as numerical representations and equations.  At this point, in the mind of fifth graders, models are still important as the students move toward using more abstract representations (e.g., numbers).
