Reflection: Classroom Setup What is a Scientist? - Section 1: Engage

Both the Kagan Cooperative Learning and GLAD strategies prescribe teams and team work as the most effective teaching practice to encourage conversation and learning retention.  It is really important to me to be able to offer a chance for all the students to participate in classroom discussions.  My ELL students tend not to speak up, if they do not need to.  I like that all students must take ownership of their learning and conversation.  This forces them to speak in the language that is so unknown to them.  Once we have established their teams and who is going to be the chosen leader for the day, I ask my question again.  This time the teams are able to have the discussion together.  Much safer to speak to only three of your teammates versus the entire class.
