Reflection: Staircase of Complexity From Seed to Tree: Determing the Importance of Tiny Details - Section 2: Main Activity

Although it seems like students have been forming theories over and over again, they are doing it in different ways each time. There are many ways that authors make their themes known. The most obvious way is the character that learns something at the end and expresses to the reader explicitly what it is. Another way is the obvious changes the character going through or the good vs. bad of the characters in the story. One of the most difficult ways is when the author using symbolism. This lesson, and all of the lessons before this one has given students the foundation to build on and develop their ability to infer what the author is trying to show in the book. If I would have started with this lesson, students would have had a very difficult time being successful but now they can access the themes of the book through paying attention to symbolism.
