Reflection: Standards Alignment Math Centers - End of Year - Section 2: Introducing Centers


Teaching patterns was taken out of the curriculum in my district this year based on the Common Core.  There is no Common Core State Standard that justifies the teaching of patterns.  I understood and accepted this yet still felt a little uncomfortable not exposing my students to patterns at all.  How can I teach them to look for patterns of numbers when they don't know what a pattern is?  I put one pattern center in during the middle of the year just for some exposure and I added two more this week.  We are going to look at number patterns in this unit and I feel that my students need some idea of what a pattern is in order to really understand this.  So how can you justify teaching patterns in your classroom?  Mathematical Practice #8: Look For and Express Regularity in Repeated Reasoning

Unit 9: Numbers to 100
Lesson 1 of 8

Objective: Students will be able to independently practice addition, subtraction, patterns, and counting.

Big Idea: At the end of the year, a lot is going on in our classroom. We continue our center routine for additional practice and to allow for end of the year testing to be completed.
